Your instincts tell you that when you’re cold, you should eat something warm. Obviously, right? That’s what we thought too. But while eating hot foods might mentally make you feel warmer, studies have shown that it’s not always the case when you look into the science of it. In fact, eating cold foods such as ice cream can actually be more effective in warming you up!
Ice cream contains a lot of fat, protein and carbs – all of which require a lot of energy to digest. When this happens, you feel warmer because you body has to provide a lot of energy (aka heat) to break it down. This leads your body to naturally heat up during the digestion process.
So what about hot foods? Surely they are also good at warming you up on a cold day. Well, nope. Eating hot or spicy foods actually tells your body to start sweating – in other words, the process that makes it cool down even more.
So next time you’re shivering cold somewhere, grabbing a scoop of ice cream could help do the trick.
